Entrepreneurs, if you’re running your business based on what others expect or following “rules” that don't resonate, it’s time to make a shift. True sovereignty in business isn’t about simply “being in control”—it's about reclaiming the power to run things on your terms, from start to finish and about forgetting all of the conscious and unconscious programming you’ve been following because of your belief that you “should”.
At its core, sovereignty means the freedom to make decisions that align with your values, without being influenced by external pressures or expectations. It’s about having the authority to lead your business, set your boundaries, and move boldly in the direction of your vision. Sovereignty means making unapologetic decisions that align with your purpose, support your growth, and allow you to be a self-determining entity with the full faith that you back yourself.
This isn’t just a concept for me; it’s a journey I know firsthand.
Let’s dive into why sovereignty is essential for every entrepreneur ready to break free from outdated systems and forge a path that’s truly their own.
For years, I worked long, draining hours in traditional law firms, where my schedule—and my energy—were directed by someone else’s vision. Being a Generator in Human Design, I’m wired to thrive on work that lights me up. Anything less than a full-bodied, soul-deep hell yes feels like resistance, draining me at my deepest core level. But back then, “lighting me up” wasn’t even part of the equation. Instead, I was pushed into the grind, stuck in a hyper-masculine energy, and guided by external expectations and all the “shoulds” that had nothing to do with my true purpose.
It wasn’t until I had experienced the micromanagement, burnout, frustration, and exhaustion that came with it all that I FINALLY listened to my own inner voice and said “fuck it” to the 9-5 life I had tried to cram myself into like some tight-ass pair of skinny jeans. I knew that my energy, my time, and my gifts were meant for something greater—something that resonated with my whole being, something that allowed me to be fully me (and not JUST the lawyer-version of me I had compartmentalized in my professional life). I knew I had to reclaim my power and build a life that didn’t ask me to compromise my alignment or my joy.
That’s why I turned to entrepreneurship, a path that demanded I step up, own my choices, and create a business rooted in sovereignty. Staying rooted is not easy work, and I have continually worked with coaches, therapists, and mentors throughout my life to challenge any of the physical, energetic, emotional, spiritual or subconscious “shoulds” or limiting beliefs that hold me back so I can unleash my inner power and allow it to expand to its fullest most sovereign potential.
Now, helping others find that same freedom that I’ve come to understand and value deep in my bones isn’t just my work; it’s my purpose. I know firsthand how transformative it can be to tune out the noise, align with your inner authority, and live from a place of personal power.
The best part? When you choose sovereignty, you’re not just changing your life and your business—you’re creating a ripple effect. Your alignment, your boundaries, and your energy become an example that empowers others to do the same. When you stand in your truth, you become a force of inspiration and freedom for everyone around you.
Sounds like a great bonus to freeing yourself from the Matrix, doesn’t it?
Sovereignty can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but for entrepreneurs sovereignty is about creating a business that you’re proud to call yours.
It’s taking back the reins and cutting ties with structures, expectations, and outdated systems that don’t serve you. And no, it’s not just a concept for big corporations—it’s for you, the fearless entrepreneur ready to make their mark on their own terms and BECOME a big corporation (only if you WANT to, that is)!
When you embrace sovereignty, you aren’t asking for permission. You’re owning every decision, trusting your instincts, and building a foundation that’s unshakeable, no matter who questions your methods. Here’s why that matters:
You Control Your Time: No more sacrificing your schedule for anyone else’s agenda. Sovereignty means structuring your day, your goals, and your boundaries to suit the life you want to lead. Have personal issues that always seemed to be an issue when you worked 9-5? Not anymore! You’re your own boss and can take that 1 pm appointment or be there for that after school pick-up because you say so!
Your Vision Comes First: With sovereignty, your vision drives every move. You’re not conforming to a “normal” business path; you’re carving out one that works for you. Whether you’re a secret spiritual creative in a logical rational person’s career choice, or you’ve discovered your passion for a solution you believe the market really needs, you get to steer the direction of the ship and chart the course for what your business creates and becomes.
Aligned Action: Every decision is yours to make—aligned, intentional, and fueled by purpose. This is the freedom to act in your best interest and that of your business without feeling bound by anyone else’s rulebook. Get ready to wrestle with yourself as you learn to throw the “shoulds” out the window and act based on your intuition, belief in yourself, and relentless pursuit of your vision.
Imagine trying to build a house without a solid foundation.
At first glance, it might look fine—walls, a roof, maybe even a few fancy windows—but the structure is weak, and the entire thing is vulnerable to collapse at the slightest challenge. Without a foundation, the house isn’t secure. It can’t weather storms, hold the weight of its own structure, or protect what’s inside. Sovereignty is that foundation in your business—it’s the unwavering base that keeps everything aligned, solid, and able to withstand whatever comes your way.
When you lack sovereignty in your business, you’re essentially building on quicksand, where each outside opinion or expectation acts as another fault line beneath your feet.
That dream client who slowly becomes your worst nightmare? Or the business partner who suddenly takes you for half? Or that person you hired to help you who stole your whole course and is now selling it as their own? Your sovereignty could have stepped in.
Without sovereignty, your business becomes a reactive structure, constantly adjusting to meet others’ standards, demands, or critiques. The weight of those outside influences makes it impossible to hold your ground or move forward with clarity and purpose towards your vision.
Sovereignty is the deep, unshakeable grounding that gives you the stability to create from a place of alignment and power. With sovereignty as your foundation, here’s what’s possible:
Constant Overwhelm Turns into Steady Confidence: When you’re not grounded in your own authority, you’re swept up in a cycle of overwhelm, constantly reacting to other people’s expectations. With sovereignty, you know what you stand for, and you no longer bend to every demand. Confidence and calm become the new norm.
Clarity Replaces Confusion: A house without a foundation can’t stand straight; it shifts, cracks, and sags under pressure. The same happens in business when you let others dictate your path and where you spend your time. Not knowing what YOUR ultimate goal and vision is will lead you to waste time trying to do the next best thing (aka shiny object syndrome) or take the next fancy course or mastermind to fix or solve whatever problem you feel you’re dealing with. I always say, “work with the end in mind”. Sovereignty provides clarity and direction because every decision is anchored in your own truth, not someone else’s.
Boundaries Become Your Structural Support: Like walls and beams in a house, boundaries are non-negotiable for maintaining your business’s integrity and strength. Sovereignty empowers you to set these boundaries with confidence, creating a safe, intentional space for you to grow and operate in alignment with your vision. Can you say “terms and conditions” and “policies and procedures”?
Without sovereignty, every small shift, storm, or change around you has the power to destabilize your business, leaving you in a constant state of catch-up or damage control. But with a foundation of sovereignty, you can move through challenges with the confidence of knowing that you are solid, aligned, and ready to face whatever comes your way.
Sovereignty is not just a luxury—it’s the bedrock of your success. When you claim that inner authority and create your business from this foundation, you ensure that your work, your time, and your energy all serve you and the vision you’ve set out to achieve.
Ok, so you’ve read this far, you must be invested in learning how to fucking GOOOO on this already. So here it is, if you’re ready to step into sovereignty and claim your business as your own, here’s how to get started:
Start by getting crystal clear on your vision. Don’t edit it based on what others might think is “realistic” or “sensible.” This vision is yours, and if it excites you, you’re on the right path.
Action Step: Take 15 minutes today to journal about what your business looks like if you had full freedom. What clients are you serving? How are you spending your time? Write it all down without holding back. Remember, don’t “should” all over yourself here. This is about expanding into your highest self.
Boundaries are the cornerstone of sovereignty. Start setting boundaries with clients, partners, and even yourself. What hours are you available? What types of projects do you accept? What are your payment terms? What about timelines? Honor these boundaries as though your life depends on it—because it does.
Action Step: Make a list of boundaries you need to put in place today, whether it’s blocking off “CEO time” for big-picture planning or setting limits on client calls. If you don’t have anything in place with clients yet, make sure to get something in writing with your new boundaries signed at the next available opportunity (and remember all contracts need an offer, consideration ($) and acceptance, to be legally binding)! If you need some templates, you can grab all the ones you’ll need to launch a coaching/ consulting/ service based business in the Business Brilliance Bundle I created to make it easy to get Legally Lit in business.
Sovereignty is about keeping what’s yours protected. When you have unique ideas or are entering joint ventures, partnerships or various collaborative business ventures, an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) ensures that what you create stays yours. It’s a foundational step for any entrepreneur looking to safeguard their work while fostering trust and creating safe containers for open collaboration in business relationships.
Action Step: Download our free NDA template to make sure your business ideas and relationships are secure as you scale. Watch the free video that comes along with the template and DIY it for each new interaction you have where you want to protect your valuables!
Don’t wait for permission or reassurance from anyone. Start making moves that align with your purpose and propel your business forward. Every day, ask yourself: What action will take me closer to my vision today? Then do it. Sovereignty is built one decision at a time.
Action Step: Commit to one bold action today. This could be pitching to a dream client, setting a higher rate, or finally launching that new offer. Choose something that feels aligned and go for it. If you need some help deciding what your One Decision should be, join us at the upcoming One Decision Away Mastermind Day in Collingwood, Ontario on December 4, 2024.
How will you know you’re moving toward sovereignty? Here are a few signs you can look out for:
You feel less reactive: Instead of being thrown off by challenges, you handle them with clarity and purpose.
Boundaries are second nature: You protect your time and energy like the precious resources they are. No more giving away your time to things that are not your utmost priorities.
You’re driven by your vision, not others’ opinions: Sovereign entrepreneurs follow their vision first and foremost, regardless of what anyone else thinks.
You trust your instincts: Decision-making becomes smoother because you’re listening to your own wisdom and intuition.
Claiming your sovereignty isn’t just about building your business—it’s about setting an example for those around you. When you run your business with purpose, confidence, and alignment, you’re showing others that it’s possible to build a life on their own terms, too. Your journey to sovereignty can have a powerful impact on everyone around you—your clients, your family, your community. You become a living testament to what’s possible when you choose freedom over fear.
Claiming your sovereignty isn’t just a mindset; it’s a strategy. It’s a commitment to yourself, your business, and your vision. When you lead with sovereignty, you’re taking the power to shape a business that serves you—not the other way around. Every entrepreneur deserves that freedom, and it starts with stepping up, setting boundaries, and protecting what you create.
In sovereignty,
Vanessa, the Soul Attorney
